Love Food…Hate Waste! 6 Top Tips

We’ve joined forces with the Working on Waste Campaign this month to help reduce waste and save money!

We want to share these 6 Top Tips with you…so you can Love Food…Hate Waste! Good Luck!

1) Planning your meals help you use up all your food. Check your cupboards, fridge & freezer before going to the shops.

2) Write a shopping list, take it with you and stick to it so you only buy what you need.

3) The ‘use by’ date is about food safety, ‘best before’ just refers to when it’s at its freshest.

4) Is your fridge cool enough? It should be below 5 degrees to keep food fresh for longer. Use a fridge thermometer to check if in doubt.

5) You can freeze any food right up to the ‘use by’ date, ideal if your plans change.

6) Keep your apples in the fridge, not in the fruit bowl, to keep them crisp and tasty for up to 2 weeks longer.

Follow these great tips…and let us know how you get on!

Skills Day – New Product Developers, watch out!

Another brilliant day was had at local secondary school Tasker Milward by Emily and a lively bunch of Year 10 pupils on Monday!

The questions…

“What are the careers opportunities within the food & farming industry?

What’s your perception of the industry? Do you need any skills!?

How does a chicken end up in a supermarket?”

 The challenge…

Design a new food product…Apprentice style!

We had some super ideas presented: Azzip Pizzas, Shawshake Redemption, Scolton Estate Pheasant, Funky Cupcakes, Chels-Lauren Ice-cream!

This is the last of our school events until September, have a super Summer Holiday!

Talking careers…get your thinking caps on!

Emily visited local secondary school – Sir Thomas Picton School on Friday 4th July to speak to a great bunch of Year 10s (a.k.a 16 year olds!)

The topic:

Food & farming careers!

It was a jam packed session talking about – opportunities, variety of jobs, salaries as well as current opportunities at Capestone!

The challenge:

Each group were asked to design a new food product to present to the rest of the groups..(pretending of course that we were the supermarket buyers!)

 Wowwee! What a creative bunch!

We discovered…. Sugar Puff Milkshake, Jalk Chocolate Bar (sounded yummy!), Swordfish Co., Heat Me Up hiker’s soup, All Sorts Ice-Cream!

Looks like we’ve uncovered the next lot of New Product Developers, hoorah!

 Well done crew!

Shearing Time at Capestone Farm!

Did you know that we’re faming other animals at Capestone Farm? Take a look here to find out more on our website.

We have cattle and sheep grazing the organic grassy pastures at Capestone. This week has been a busy ol’ week for our farm manager Alan and shepherdess Helen as they gathered the troops together to do the annual shearing!

A lot to get through…but the sun shone over the coast and the sheep are now much cooler! Always a great event to watch.

This time, our Jess took a visit to see the shearers and find out more!
