Update – AI and Free Range Status

Customer Announcement on Avian Influenza

The  Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs announced a new Avian Influenza Prevention Zone, in place from 28 February until 30 April 2017.

The Avian Influenza Prevention Zone requires all keepers to complete a self assessment of bio-security measures on their premises, which Capestone has completed.

Information on the requirements of the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone, guidance and latest developments are all available on the Welsh Government website.

Capestone have implemented a heightened level of bio-security in line with our risk assessment and we can ensure customers that the health and well being of all our live poultry is paramount.

Our birds are currently housed but will be allowed controlled outside access with additional risk mitigation measures from 1st April 2017. The derogation in place for the ‘Free Range’ Status of the birds will end on the 28th March.

We  would ask all our customers during this period to display the following notice in their stores/shelves. The notice must be prominently displayed next to the birds on sale (not at the entrance or tills).

ORGANIC & FREE RANGE CHICKEN PRODUCTS

Following the recent incidences of Avian Flu in the UK, we are following Government advice to keep poultry indoors. All our Organic and Free Range birds are being housed in barns. Although the birds are not allowed to roam outside, all other higher welfare standards will continue to be met.  This is a temporary measure, which ensures the welfare of our birds and supports British farmers. As soon as restrictions are lifted, we will return to normal free range practices.

Avian Influenza is a notifiable disease, and any suspicion should be reported immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Keepers should practice the highest levels of bio-security if they are to minimise the risk of infection.

Information on the requirements of the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone, guidance and latest developments are all available on the Welsh Government website.

Will inform you as to when our poultry sheds will be opened to allow birds to free range and labelling can be removed.
